AI Engineering Foundations with GitHub Copilot
Use Copilot to make one small repository change, then test and review what it produced.
Your practical result
A small feature change with tests, a readable diff and a checklist for reviewing AI-generated code.
The outline below is built around this result. Final tools and setup instructions will be confirmed with the session details before registration opens.
Who this is for
Developers beginning AI-assisted engineering who can already read and edit basic code.
What you’ll practice
- Give an assistant a bounded task with context and acceptance criteria.
- Inspect generated changes and verify behavior with meaningful tests.
- Explain the diff and record what still requires human judgment.
Your two-hour workshop outline
A guided demonstration, a substantial build exercise, and time to check the result. Times are approximate and include discussion.
- 0–10 min
Define a small feature
Read the starter project and agree on a single observable behavior.
- 10–30 min
Guide Copilot with context
Demonstrate a bounded request, repository context and a reviewable change.
- 30–45 min
Write acceptance checks
Identify a normal input, a boundary case and an expected failure.
- 45–85 min
Implement with assistance
Make the feature change, inspect the diff and run the relevant checks.
- 85–105 min
Review the result
Look for unsupported assumptions, unnecessary changes and gaps in verification.
- 105–120 min
Record the workflow
Summarize the change and save a reusable prompt-and-review checklist.
Before you attend
- Basic programming, Git and editor familiarity; this is not a first coding lesson.
- A prepared starter repository and setup check will be supplied before the session opens.
Tools and access
A working GitHub Copilot account and compatible editor will be required. Exact plan, editor and starter-project requirements will be confirmed before enrollment; a subscription is not included.
Delivery platform, location or joining instructions will be published with each confirmed session. Use practice material you have permission to share.
Your instructor
Elliott Lamboy
Elliott teaches these Texas AI Consulting workshops. The session is designed around a guided example, your own practice, and a review of the work produced.
Questions before you join
How is this different from AI for Software Engineering?
Foundations uses a small prepared repository and introduces the prompt, change, test and review loop. The software engineering workshop starts with an existing-system maintenance problem.
When is the next session, and what does it cost?
Dates and fees are coming soon. The planned window is Friday, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. America/Chicago. Ask about availability below; an inquiry does not reserve a seat.
What will be confirmed before I register?
The session date, fee, capacity, delivery platform, exact software requirements, and cancellation/refund terms will be available before registration opens. Recording or replay access is not currently promised.
Can my team request a private workshop?
Yes. Choose “A private group workshop” in the inquiry form and describe your goal or group size. Elliott can discuss availability and fit.
